Human Powered Boat Design and Engineering Adviser
I graduated in engineering from the University of Queensland, Australia and have worked in the Australian mining industry or associated businesses since graduating. My interest in boats stems from a long family association with the sea. My father, grandfather and great grandfather all made a living sailing and navigating boats and small ships. Consequently I have been involved with work boats and pleasure boats my entire life. I sold my last yacht 15 years ago as my immediate family had little interest in yachts. After selling the yacht I began building model yachts to test hull designs with a view to designing a yacht for my retirement. In 2002 I decided to build a small human powered boat. My aims were to experiment with propulsion systems and hull design at a scale that I could actually use on the water. I have built twelve boats over tha last 5 years and have gradually improved my knowledge base and design tools such that I can now design and engineer HPBs with a degree of precision. This enables accurate performance prediction and more reliable operation while being able to evaluate the merit of different options without actually testing the idea at full scale.

Expedition boat builder
Ken graduated from the Aircraft Maintenance Engineer “M” program at Stevenson Aviation Technical Training Center in Winnipeg Manitoba in 2003. After working for a short time in certified Aviation he decided that wasn’t quite his niche. He then began working on the construction of custom composite high performance kit aircraft such as the Lancair IV-PT and the Turbine Legend. In 2007 Ken started up his own Calgary-based hardwood flooring installation business of all things Exquisite Flooring. In late 2008 Ken put his flooring business on hold and got back into composites. In Early 2009 at age 27 his business Stratto Composites began full-time fabrication of the new ocean crossing boat “WiTHiN”.
It’s been quite interesting, says Ken; I find Composites more intellectually satisfying than the flooring, but the flooring business has done me quite well and I still plan on doing more of it. With regards to Composites and “WiTHiN”, bringing a concept to life with Australian engineers I have never met has been quite a cool challenge. Skype and tones of emails have come in handy quite often. Rick and Stuart are great to communicate with and are brilliant at what they do!
The idea of composites has always drawn me since I was formally introduced to them in detail while in Aviation College. It’s the perfect blend of art, craftsmanship and modern technology. Ever since I was a kid I’ve been building stuff and tearing stuff apart to see how it works or if I can make it better. My Mom put up with me a lot and really stretched her means to accommodate me from a very young age. Finally, when I was about 12 years old she and my Grandfather helped me to setup a small shop in our basement where we lived in McCreary Manitoba. Ever since then the projects I have involved myself with have gotten wilder.
