Pedal the Ocean

About 'Pedal the Ocean'

Childhood obesity matters

Our modern sedentary lifestyle is putting our kids at risk of becoming the first generation that will have a life expectancy shorter than that of their parents. Childhood obesity can cause poor self esteem and be socially isolating. In adulthood, being seriously over-weight can often lead to illness and premature death. Unfortunately, between 10 and 15% of our children are obese. Obesity in childhood often leads to obesity in adulthood. Most parents want the best for their children - including the chance to lead a long and healthy life. For obese children this goal is seriously threatened.

the Human Powered Trans-Atlantic Speed Record

When Greg Kolodziejzyk set the 24hr Human Powered Speed Record in his Critical Power human powered vehicle he showed the world something profound. Greg showed us that there is one place we can look to find the courage we need to face and overcome the challenge that threatens to disadvantage our children; within ourselves.

The fastest man on land now plans to turn his passion for Human Power to the sea in a challenge he calls "Pedal the Ocean". In late 2008, Greg will set out to pedal across the Atlantic Ocean in a boat that he calls "WiTHiN", designed specifically for the human powered speed record.

In Dec. of 2008, Greg is planning on pedaling his human powered boat "WiTHiN" 3000 miles across the Atlantic ocean in less than 40 days setting a new world record for the fastest human powered Atlantic crossing. Pedal The Ocean explores the limits of what is possible with human power.

Pedal the Ocean represents our faith in the future ...

In concert with Pedal the Ocean, an innovative education program in association with the Childhood Obesity Foundation encourages children to lead a healthy life, be active and promotes global awareness about the childhood obesity epidemic. Greg Kolodziejzyk will visit schools in North America. During these visits Greg hosts interactive Q&A presentations, affording primary, middle, and high school students the opportunity to interact and discover the something of human power. The Kid Power education program enhances classroom activities by providing a free geography, physical education, science and social sciences curriculum for use in schools throughout North America.
